The 2024 vintage was remarkable for its ideal weather and harvest conditions. Perfectly-timed weather during bloom ensured a generous crop, a rarity here on the coast. A warm July was followed by a mild August, gifting us with ideal ripening weather. Harvest saw no rain or heat events, ensuring perfect fruit conditions in the cellar.
The resulting wines are exuberant and full of energy, with a silky texture, moderate tannins and a gorgeous red fruit profile. These are wines of great pleasure that can be enjoyed young, but their immediacy does not come at the cost of precision or site character, which the 2024s have in spades.
The winter and early spring were cold and wet, keeping the vines dormant well into March. The first signs of budbreak did not arrive until March 28, about a week later than average.
April brought gradual warming, and a late spring rain of 1.8” arrived on May 4, accompanied by strong winds. By the week of May 6, temperatures reached the high 70s and the vines responded with a growth spurt.
Weather during bloom was, in a word, ideal. By the week of May 27, the flowers were opening under warm, dry skies with a light breeze, perfect conditions for even pollination and set. A dramatic warming arrived on June 4, with temperatures reaching 91°F and accelerating berry set. By June 17, the vineyard was on track to reach 90% fruit set. These conditions gifted us with a generous crop, a rare occasion here on the coast.
June was warmer than average for inland California locations, but coastal temperatures remained near normal, a pattern that would persist through much of the summer. July opened with the most dramatic weather event of the season: a record-breaking, two-week heat dome. Luckily, the Pacific Ocean did its job and kept temps in the low 90s. Critically, the vines did not shut down; photosynthesis and canopy growth continued through the heatwave.
August was beautiful: warm and sunny, with occasional fog on the coast and temperatures mostly in the 70s. Veraison progressed with impressive evenness, a fortunate consequence of the swift bloom period.
Harvest began on August 28, and the weather gods continued their beneficence during the picking, with no rain or heat events. Harvest proceeded at a measured pace and concluded in the second week of September.
The 2024 Wines
The 2024 Pinot Noirs are exuberant and full of energy, with a silky texture, moderate tannins and a gorgeous red fruit profile. These are wines of great pleasure that can be enjoyed young, but their immediacy does not come at the cost of precision or site character, which the 2024s have in spades.
The Hirsch Chardonnay in 2024 is captivating and seductive, balancing richness with restraint. The palate is medium-bodied with an energetic texture. This is a quietly opulent vintage of our Chardonnay that is both approachable in its youth and poised for evolution in the cellar.
In 2024, we produced the following wines at Hirsch Vineyards:
Our Estate Chardonnay is the only white wine we produce at Hirsch. With less than four acres of Chardonnay vines, production is highly limited.
The 2024 Chardonnay was direct pressed and transferred to French and Eastern European oak barrels, 25% new, for fermentation and élevage. No yeast was added at any point. Primary and malolactic fermentations occurred in barrel. No lees stirring was employed. The wine was racked clean to stainless steel for one month before bottling.
The 2024 Hirsch Chardonnay has a captivating and seductive aromatic profile that balances richness with restraint. Notes of lemon curd, honeysuckle, and delicate pastry cream emerge with air. A faint saline note evokes the Pacific Ocean. The palate is medium-bodied with an energetic texture. This is a quietly opulent vintage of our Chardonnay that is both approachable in its youth and poised for evolution in the cellar.
Our intention in making a rosé at Hirsch Vineyards is to capture the character of Hirsch Pinot Noir, in rosé form.
Made with 100% Hirsch Pinot Noir, the grapes were harvested at close to the same time we pick for red Pinot Noir, ensuring a complete ripeness profile. The grapes were destemmed and macerated overnight before being pressed. The juice was barreled down into oak barrels for fermentation, with no added yeast or stirring. Approximately 32% new oak was used. After ten months in barrel, the wine was bottled. It was then aged in bottle for another ten months before release.
The 2024 Rosé is a luminous coral pink. It draws you in immediately, with an expressive bouquet of fresh peaches, honeysuckle and a hint of watermelon. On palate it’s rich and vibrant, offering fruit concentration balanced by lively acidity. Juicy, refreshing and irresistibly drinkable.
The Bohan-Dillon is an authentic, handmade Pinot Noir that is delicious young and effortlessly food-friendly.
David Hirsch was inspired to create the Bohan-Dillon back in 2006 as an homage to the great village wines of France: a well-priced wine with place and personality, made with the same care and attention as the top wines. We make this wine using the same winemaking methods and with the same attention to detail as our top Pinots, thereby ensuring a wine of great quality, traditional Pinot character, and sense of place.
In 2024, the Bohan-Dillon Pinot Noir was produced exclusively from Hirsch grapes, a rare occasion as this wine is usually a blend of three different vineyards. This is a charming, exuberant wine with lots of personality and character. It opens with a bouquet of cherries, ripe strawberries and cassis. With air, notes of plum skin, wet stone and redwood forest emerge. On the palate, it’s juicy and mouthwatering, with an easy, irresistible drinkability.
